Antagonism of amino acids in the growth of lactic acid bacteria.

چکیده
Inhibition of microbial growth by compounds closely related to essential metabolites has been demonstrated by many investigators (l-3). Early workers (4-7) showed that inhibitory effects of single amino acids could be reversed by altering the concentration of structurally related amino acids. Gladstone (8), using Bacillus anthracis, showed such a relationship among leucine, valine, and isoleucine and between threonine and serine. Threonine exerts an antagonistic action on the utilization of serine by Lactobacillus arabinosus (9). Using Lactobacillus casei, Feeney and Strong (10) demonstrated an inhibitory effect of aspartic acid, reversible by glutamine, glut.amic acid, or asparagine. While investigat.ing a uniform medium for the microbiological determination of amino acids (II), certain difficulties were encountered with the glutamic acid and isoleucine assays with Lactobacillus arabinosus. A lag in the growth response curve was observed at the lower concentrations of these amino acids. The tubes containing samples, particularly in the case of isoleucine assays, did not show this lag to the same extent as the standard curves, resulting in marked downward drift of assay values. To alleviate the lag in the glutamic acid curve and to give a valid assay, a heavy inoculum and adjustment of the medium to pH 6 have been used (12). While this provided a satisfactory assay for glutamic acid, further work on the fundamental defect was indicated. As in previous studies (13, 12, 14, 15), when glutamic acid standard was replaced by glutamine (sterilized by filLration) the lag was absent. This indicated, as suggested previously (12, 14), that glutamic acid is utilized through glutamine and that the lag is the result of partial or complete failure of the small amounts of glutnmic acid present to be amidated to glut>smine. In this study the mutual antagonism of the members of two groups of

Antibacterial activity, antibiotic susceptibility and probiotic use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus)
Growth behavior of five lactic acid bacteria previously isolated from Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus), were evaluated at different pH, temperature and salt concentrations. Also, antibacterial activity of extracellular products (ECPs) of this LAB were assessed to Aeromonas hydrophila . Further, their antibiotic susceptibility was determined with some commonly used antibiotics in aquacultur...

The aim of this study was to screen potential probiotic bacteria against Aeromonas hydrophila and determine the effects of antagonistic bacteria and a commercial product containing lactic acid bacteria on the survival and growth of stage II Astacus leptodactylus juveniles. For this purpose, a total of 110 bacterial strains were isolated from adult, stage II crayfish juveniles and rearing water ...

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of adding lactic acid to the diet of rainbow trout on growth indices, activity of digestive enzymes and microbial flora of the fish gastrointestinal tract. For this purpose, 4 diets containing 0, 5, 10 and 20 g of lactic acid per kg of diet were made and each diet was offered to fish in three replications for 8 weeks. The results showed that t...
متن کاملA Study on the Antibacterial Activity of Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Traditional Iranian Milk Samples
198 Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from Iranian milk samples. Almost all isolatedLAB showed inhibitory activity towards E. coli and S. aureus as Gram negative and Grampositive indicators, respectively. No role was observed for hydrogen peroxide in the activity ofall isolated strains while organic acids proved a prominent role in all detected inhibitoryactivities. Within isolated LAB, ...

متن کاملInhibitory Effect of Isolated Lactic Acid Bacteria from Scomberomorus commerson Intestines and their Bacteriocin on Listeria innocua
ABSTRACT- Lactic acid bacteria are commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of various endothermic animals and humans, in milk, dairy and seafood products and on some plant surfaces. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of isolated lactic acid bacteria from intestines of narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) on Listeria innocua growth. Five strai...
